The AI race will be won by hotels with trusted data, not more technology, says Ireckonu
Ireckonu, a leading provider of hospitality technology solutions, warns that AI adoption in hospitality risks falling short without a strong guest data strategy. As hotels accelerate the adoption of AI, the real challenge is not the technology itself, but the quality of the data powering it.
According to Jan Jaap van Roon, CEO of Ireckonu, hospitality is largely operating with guest information that is fragmented across multiple systems and platforms. This fragmentation prevents hotels from building a single, reliable digital profile of each guest, which is a requisite for successful AI implementation.
Van Roon believes the root of the problem lies in technology architectures that were originally designed to manage rooms and reservations rather than guests. "For decades, the PMS has been the operational backbone of hotels, connecting an ever-growing ecosystem of technology platforms. But most PMS architectures were never designed to understand guests. They were built to manage inventory and room nights”, says Van Roon.
In this context, Ireckonu’s CEO warns that implementing AI on top of disconnected systems can worsen existing problems, such as duplicate guest profiles, inconsistent records, and the inability to recognize loyal customers. At best, these limitations prevent any AI-driven technology from delivering its full potential, and at worst can actively damage guest experience and brand reputation.
"When systems aren't connected, the true value of a guest becomes distorted. A regular visitor may be treated as a first-time customer, while a loyal guest receives generic communications. Without a unified guest profile, personalization simply isn't possible“, concludes Van Roon
AI's biggest opportunity lies in trusted guest identity
For Hanna Schiller, VP of Sales at Ireckonu, the case is clear: while hospitality is entering a period of rapid AI adoption from virtual assistants, to service automation and predictive personalization, it is not data ready. She believes the industry is focusing on the potential of what AI can do before addressing whether the data it relies on can truly be trusted.
According to Schiller, many hotel organizations have spent years investing in new technology while overlooking the quality and governance of the data that powers it.
"Many hotel groups are investing in increasingly sophisticated AI solutions while still relying on fragmented guest histories and disconnected systems that fail to provide a consistent view of the guest. The challenge isn't the technology, it's the data infrastructure supporting it"
Schiller argues that becoming truly AI-ready requires hotels to resolve fundamental questions about guest identity, such as who owns it, which system serves as the single source of truth, and how data is governed, integrated, and protected across the entire technology ecosystem.
Poorly implemented AI doesn't just fail to deliver value, it amplifies existing problems
From a marketing perspective, Schiller believes AI represents an unprecedented opportunity to change how hotels engage with their guests. However, she argues that AI initiatives are unlikely to deliver on their promise unless they are supported by a robust data strategy.
"Hotel marketers have never had more powerful tools at their disposal. AI can generate campaigns, personalize content and automate processes at a speed that would have been unimaginable just a few years ago. But having the best AI technology without trusted data is like owning a Ferrari without fuel".
Ireckonu believes that preparing for the AI era requires a fundamental change in how hotels manage data. The organizations making the greatest progress are those that understand that data is a strategic business asset.

Loyalty, recognition, revenue and AI —enabled by a single source of guest truth, built for hospitality.
